Scent of Style: A Guide to Men's Fragrance

What it is and what it is for?

The first fragrances to be created were in Ancient Egypt, with pharaohs and important court members being the first to benefit from them.

In this way, the use of perfume spread throughout the world and is currently one of the most sought-after commodities.

Perfume was conceived with the main purpose of providing a pleasant and lasting fragrance to the human body, as it is produced with aromatic essences.

What are the most used ingredients and their function?

Perfumes are typically composed of a mixture of oils, alcohol, and water, but what sets them apart from each other are their aromatic families. The main aromatic families for men's perfumes are as follows:

Citrus, extracted from citrus peels and fruits, such as lemon, bergamot, tangerine, mandarin, among others.

Chypre, produced with raw materials derived from mosses, typically from oak, reminiscent of earthy essence.

Woody, extracted from woods, including examples like pine, sandalwood, and cedar from Lebanon, as well as warm balsamic resins like incense and myrrh.

Aquatic, characterized by an aroma that conveys the freshness of water, composed of marine notes like herbs, green leaves, cucumber, sage, and rosemary.

Leather, which imparts an extremely dry fragrance, with main raw materials derived from tobacco, woods, leather, mosses, etc.

Oriental, considered the most intense, consisting of the combination of exotic spices like tuberose, anise, cinnamon, vanilla, patchouli, among others.

Which types exist and what are their differences?

In addition to the aromatic families, another strong characteristic of perfumes is their category, which can be Eau de Cologne, Eau de Toilette, and Eau de Parfum.

Eau de Cologne is one of the oldest fragrances and one of the most used in men's perfumes, with a slightly stronger duration than Eau Fraiche (the feminine version), due to being composed of 2% to 4% perfume oils in alcohol and water.

Eau de Toilette is the most frequently used fragrance and in greater quantity, lasting between 4 to 6 hours. It contains between 5% to 10% essential oils.

Eau de Parfum is the fragrance with the highest durability and the highest concentration of essential oils (10% to 15%). Care should be taken when applying it to clothing, hair, etc.

What is the most used packaging format and what are the most frequent sizes?

Men's perfumes usually come in very elegant and masculine packaging, which can be either simple or more elaborate. For example, Hugo Boss's Boss Bottled Eau de Toilette features a simple and sophisticated bottle, while Paco Rabanne's 1 Million Eau De Toilette boasts a more elaborate and elegant design.

The most common sizes are 50ml, 100ml, and 200ml. Of course, there are other sizes, depending on the brand and the perfume's format.

What to take into account when choosing a perfume?

When choosing a perfume, there are several parameters to consider.

For example, as previously mentioned, the intensity and duration desired in a fragrance (with Eau de Cologne being lighter and Eau de Parfum the most concentrated).

Another crucial factor is skin type. Depending on skin oiliness, the fragrance tends to adhere more or less. For oily skin, fragrances with oriental or citrus aromatic families are more suitable. For drier skin, fragrance aromas evaporate more quickly, making woodsy or oriental compositions better options.

Personal preferences also play a role in the choice, with each perfume's olfactory notes being crucial.

A perfume's notes make it unique, with three types: top notes (the scent upon application), heart notes (adding personality and lasting longer), and base notes (responsible for fixing the fragrance on the skin).

The choice of a perfume can vary greatly based on personal taste, but these factors ease the selection process, whether for personal use or as a gift.

What are the recommendations for use and tips?

The main question regarding perfume usage is inevitably "where to apply it?" Some parts of the body are more suitable than others for applying perfume, as they make it last longer and enhance its olfactory effect.

Hair is one of the main areas, as perfume clings to its fibers, prolonging its lifespan. Another area is behind the ears, as this is a pulse point where blood is warmer, amplifying the fragrance. Wrists, also pulse points, are similar to the area behind the ears. Finally, applying it to clothing allows the fragrance to adhere due to the fabric's fibers, ensuring the scent accompanies you all day.

Another essential tip is where you store the perfume. To ensure its longevity, it should be stored in a dark and cool place. Locations like the bathroom are not recommended because the fragrance is exposed to temperature fluctuations, and areas with bright light can oxidize the notes and alter their odor.

What are the reference brands of men's perfumes?

Currently, there are numerous brands dedicated to this type of product. However, in the past, it wasn't as common; there were few brands of men's perfumes. One of the first was Acqua di Parma, which launched its first Eau de Cologne in 1916.

Later, in 1955, Chanel launched its first masculine fragrance, Pour Monsieur, which became highly successful.

Nowadays, several big names exist in the men's fragrance market, including Christian Dior, Paco Rabanne, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Jean Paul Gaultier, among others.

What are the pros and cons of using perfume?

In contemporary times, perfume is essential in daily life, but we should be aware that besides the benefits, there can be some disadvantages.

Using perfume promotes a pleasant and satisfying scent on the body, making the person smell and feel good throughout the day. Feeling good can enhance confidence in interactions with others, potentially boosting self-esteem.

Perfumes also have positive effects on the brain. Each aroma is perceived by olfactory receptor neurons, reaching the brain to identify the scent, eliciting different reactions and sensations, from nostalgia to joy associated with life's moments.

Better sleep is also one of the experiences promoted by perfume, as it contains essential oils that relax the brain, often alleviating headaches.

On the other hand, perfume can cause allergies and skin-related issues. The chemicals used in perfume production are often not suitable for certain skin types, leading to sneezing, coughing, or hives.

Additionally, ingredients like petroleum jelly, microcrystalline wax, and other petroleum derivatives are often used to improve the perfume's texture. However, these mineral oils can dry out the skin, impeding normal skin respiration and clogging pores. They can also impair the skin's defensive functions, leading to skin irritations and dermatitis.
