Estée Lauder has a unique and special history, tradition and philosophy that have made it a reference in the world of beauty. What is the secret of this success, which lasts for over 60 years? The fact that the creations combine rare ingredients, revolutionary technologies, gratifying textures, sophisticated aromas and elegant packaging. Estée Lauder products bring together SCIENCE and LUXURY in order to provide real benefits and sensory positive experiences. The daughter of Jewish-Hungarian immigrants, Estée Lauder started out selling face creams that were made by her uncle John Schotz, a Viennese chemist, in her own kitchen. It was her uncle who taught her how to make the face cream, which she dubbed the Super-Rich All Purpose Cream, and she kept trying it out on family and friends. In the years that followed, she dedicated herself to perfecting the product created by John. Her first clients were Florence Morris, the owner of a beauty salon in New York's Upper West Side, and her customers. She had found a captive audience interested in seeing what she had to show and offer. When Florence opened a new salon in the Upper East Side area, she got a concession for her beauty products and so expanded her business, selling the creams to homes and several beauty salons in New York's luxury hotels. Determined to give women the opportunity to feel beautiful, she, together with her husband, Joseph Lauder, founded, in 1946, a cosmetics and beauty products company named after her (ESTÉE LAUDER COMPANIES), which quickly became synonymous with of quality, femininity and sophistication. |

The choice of the name with which it became internationally known started long before the brand emerged. According to reports, her family members used to call her by the nickname "Esty" (whose correct pronunciation would be És-ti). One day, however, an employee of the public school where she studied called her Estée, a way in which she ended up being always identified by her classmates, thus adopting the nickname. While engaged in business, in January 1930, she married Joseph H. Lauter, son of Lillian and William Lauter, Jewish immigrants from Galicia. The couple later changed their name to Lauder. The choice of the brand name was therefore a consequence of these events: the combination of her surname with her husband's surname. |
