History
|
The story begins when Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint Laurent, during his adolescence, Yves designed dresses for his mother and sisters, already demonstrating his innate talent for fashion. At age seventeen, while studying in Paris, he entered a 1954 contest sponsored by the International Wool Secretariat and won first prize in a cocktail dress. He was later hired by the traditional Dior brand as a modeling assistant and continued his first year doing simple tasks, decorating the studio and designing accessories. Eventually, however, he was allowed to present sketches for the haute couture collections. So, each season, more models of him were accepted by Dior. When Christian Dior died in 1957, the young Algerian with a French spirit took over the creative direction of the sophisticated and famous brand with the challenge of saving the business from financial ruin. |
