History

SHISEIDO was founded in 1872 by Arinobu Fukuhara, a former chief pharmacist of the Japanese navy, who opened Japan's first western-style private pharmacy in the city of Ginza, the center of fashion and culture in Japan. Concerned about poor quality of pharmaceuticals sold to the public, he opened SHISEIDO PHARMACY to introduce pharmaceuticals along Western lines at a time when herbal medicine still predominated. This avant-garde, heavily research and development pharmacist has grown to become one of the oldest existing companies in Japan. For two and a half decades its most successful products have been Japan's first toothpaste, called Fukuhara Sanitary Toothpaste, launched in 1888 and advertised as an effective product for protecting teeth and gums against tooth decay and disease, due to its revolutionary formula for the time, which contained fluoride; and the Kakkegan vitamin tablet, introduced in 1893, with the purpose of combating Beriberi disease, which although the cause had not yet been determined, was based on the theory that the disease was caused by malnutrition. Its relationship with cosmetics began in 1897, when it launched Eudermine on the market. Although most cosmetics were made from natural ingredients such as hustle, the new product was based on a highly effective "scientific" formula derived from Western pharmaceutical theory. These concepts are evident in the name of the product itself, which in Greek means "good" (I) and "skin" (dermis). |
